The Palmetto Chapter, in Charleston, South Carolina, was founded March 13, 2009.

Our goal is to provide networking and professional development opportunities to promote the role of women in national defense and security, to support military service members, and to encourage partnerships between the local contractor community and military personnel at SPAWAR-LANT, the Charleston Air Force Base and the Department of Homeland Security. Charleston and surrounding areas are enjoying expanded growth. Accompanying this growth are enhanced business opportunities through increased technology integration companies moving into the region to support these opportunities.

In recognition of the WID Palmetto Chapter’s Carolinas State orientation, we will strive to actively promote women for key leadership and technical positions throughout this region to include: Charleston, Greenville, and Columbia as well as Fayetteville and Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area in North Carolina.

Women In Defense, a National Security Organization provides women a dynamic environment for professional growth through networking, career development and educational programs. Membership is open to women and men whose primary professional activities relate to the United States’ national security. WID is one of four affiliates of NDIA, which represents all facets of the defense and technology industrial base and serves all military services.

WID traces its roots to 1979 when a group of women saw the need for women in the defense industry and military to have a network to expand their knowledge of national security issues and the defense community. Membership in WID is open to professional women and men whose primary professional activities relate to national security.

Members are typically from defense companies and other businesses, both small and large; all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces, plus federal government agencies; and academia, associations, and professional services.  Active military and government employees may receive complimentary membership.
